ASA 101, Basic Keelboat Sailing

Day One:
  • 8:30am to Noon - Classroom
      - Basic Sailing Theory
      - Sails and Parts of Sails
      - Functions of Sailboat Parts
      - Parts of a Sailboat
      - Points of Sail
      - Basic Rules of the Road
      - Sailing Terms
      - Person Overboard
      - Knots and Lines

  • Noon to 1:00pm - Lunch

  • 1:00pm to 5:00pm - On the Water
    After lunch, it’s out on the water for hands on sailing experience using the theories and principles covered in class. Everyone takes the helm to practice maneuvers under the guidance of your instructor. On returning to the dock, everyone participates in securing the boat and equipment.


Day Two:
  • 8:30am to 3pm - On the Water
    The class will meet at the boat for a day of sailing. We will dock at one of the local restaurants on Clear Lake for lunch and return to our dock by 3:00 and secure the boat. After a short review of the material presented, you will take the written examination. Following the exam, we will complete your logbook and submit your certification to ASA.

    You are now qualified to sail a boat of about 30 feet in length and hone your sailing skills.


The Basic Keelboat Course is a prerequisite for the next levels of ASA.

Certification: Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering.
